The degree of Doctor of Computer Science (DCS, DCompSci, DSc.Comp, D.C.Sc.) is an applied research doctorate in computer science awarded on the basis of advanced study and research in the field of computer science. Often Universities will also ask for significant experience in professional supervisory position involving responsibility for IT management issues. The DCompSci, DCS, or D.C.Sc. CAND. normally requires a significant dissertation or final comprehensive research project including a formal defense and approval by nominated examiners or an officially sanctioned and qualified doctoral review committee. The degree is conferred when all coursework, testing, and written research is completed satisfactorily and when it has been examined, reviewed and approved by the awarding institution.

Relationship between DCS and Ph.D.
The Doctor of Computer Science is not recognized by the National Science Foundation or the U.S. Department of Education as a research doctorate equivalent to a Ph.D in Computer Science The DCS is normally completed in three years, with a split of approximately two years of coursework and one on the dissertation. An American Ph.D., in contrast, normally requires a minimum of five years (normally longer), with at least three years spent on the dissertation.
Both doctorates are research doctorates representing the highest academic qualification in business in the United States. As such, both DCS and Ph.D programs require students to develop original research leading to a dissertation defense. Furthermore, both doctorates enable holders to become faculty members at academic institutions. The DCS. and Ph.D in Computer Science are terminal degrees, allowing the recipient to obtain a tenure-track position. Unlike Ph.D. program which typically require teaching experience, applied research programs such as the DCS, teaching experience may not be required for a DCS.
The Ph.D is highly focused on developing theoretical knowledge, while the DCS emphasizes applied research.
